SEN interview
Me and SEN aka John Shern did a Skype interview yesterday. We have been talking for almost two hours. And you are allowed to read it all
Sherny: Hi mate. We’ll start interview in 10mins?
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ok
Evaldas Azbukauskas: let me know when 10 minutes pass
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ![]()
Sherny: Lol sure will. Had an invasion today with my niece and co
Evaldas Azbukauskas: hehe
Sherny: ready now actually ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ok
Sherny: listening to Deepchord lol
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i do that quite often too
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i found out about that album recently
Sherny: it’s great..as always
Evaldas Azbukauskas: Hash bar loops it’s called
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: what track are you listening to?
Sherny: Balm
Evaldas Azbukauskas: oh it's also from this album
Sherny: oh yes..i bought the cd
Evaldas Azbukauskas: very cool [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so how have you been recently?
Sherny: Well it's been a mixture of good, very good & unsure ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: well if there's no "bad" in the list then it's great i think ![]()
Sherny: Yeah true...just very uncertain times for me personally
Evaldas Azbukauskas: personal stuff?
Sherny: yes. career wise etc
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i see. i hope the album release makes up for it, at least a little bit? [:
Sherny: Yes. it's certainly given me a 'spark' lol
Sherny: in fact this album was made during very personal times..so in all if these things did not happen it's doubtful there'd be an album at all..in my opinion. So..good things come out of bad ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: yes that's a very good atitude [:
Sherny: I try hehe
Sherny: I think you have to in life
Evaldas Azbukauskas: yes i totaly agree with you
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you have two ways
Evaldas Azbukauskas: up or down
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: nobody wants to go down, although we sometimes do
Sherny: yes of course. if we didn't know when we're down then..we would not appreciate the good things as much..I think.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: also true
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you cannot tell what's good unless you have seen what's bad i guess
Sherny: (rolling a cigarette)...indeed ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so you put a lot of emotional experience of yours into this album?
Sherny: i try to yes..or at least find something..like a chord sample..atmosphere & try to define in the music where I am personally. It's usually been from positive & not so positive experiences. For example 'Within Reach'
Evaldas Azbukauskas: this track in particular sounds like a positive experience to me personaly, is it?
Sherny: It's funny you say that as my good mate 'The Future Thought Tapestries' said to me: He imagines to be on a beach at sunset & hearing this track..so yes. He interpreted it that way. The first part of it was meant to define an uncertainty.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: yeah i kind of also have an image of a beach when i listen to it
Sherny: The second part is a resolution, an epiphany of sorts I guess that your dreams, aspirations a girl in your life etc can be 'Within Reach'..corny as it sounds lol
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i see [: interesting
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so i'd be right if i said that this album is a reflection of your recent life experience in an emotional level
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ?
Sherny: Yes i'd say that's very true
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and also it's called Sensory Emotive Network which suggests it is about emotions in some way
Sherny: yes. in all my music which i'll make now & in future will always be about emotins. At least under the SEN guise anyway.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and i know that you really liked the idea of the cover art. do you think that it's like a pretty good visual expression of what SEN is?
Sherny: Yeah I do. Somehow it struck a chord with me straight away when i saw it. Hard to put into words
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool [: i wanted to ask, what is satellite religion?
Sherny: lol
Sherny: well..Satellite Religion is something that GRIT, me, Scott (FTT) & my mate Neil (Channel 73) are collectively called. We were at the Big Chill one year & we happened to be outside our tents listening to the sounds around us. The almost black sky was shimmering & we could make out the Satellites moving to & fro across the sky & for me that was an amazing moment, to see not just one but many of them & I believe it started from there. How music could be emitted from these & into our subconcious minds. Each of us having our own objectives ..I believe. Hope I done GRIT justice there, because he founded the name I think. ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: that's an interesting story [:
Sherny: it was a cool moment & this was over 10 years ago..never thought it'd happen really..maybe one day ![]()
Sherny: Watch out for Future Thought Tapestries..he is coming soon ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: Never heard of that name actually, GRIT is quite well know around this scene
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and i remember i listened to his tracks before falling asleep with my mp3 player before i knew you
Sherny: ahh cool
GRIT & FTT have been making music for years really. It's because of them I'm here in a big way. I owe a lot to them & to Channel 73. Unbelievable talents they all have.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool hope they'll be successful [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and by the way i'll tell you how i found out about you
Evaldas Azbukauskas: one friend of mine, a dj sent me a track "santav" or something like that, it's released on instabil label, and i thought it's very interesting stuff, like dub techno in a totaly new way, and then i came across you in myspace
Sherny: Satnav yes..my first ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: your first release?
Sherny: yes it was
Sherny: First release & then it was to be on vinyl!!. I was blown away!!
Evaldas Azbukauskas: yeah i can imagine how did you feel
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so your mates were making music for a very long time. what about you
Evaldas Azbukauskas: how did it start for you?
Sherny: to the first question: Firstly? Like I didn't deserve a vinyl release, only having started doing this quite late in life really & that I really felt my mate Scott should be hahving this as he is a talented man & that I just cut in on it all.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: oh i see [:
Sherny: Second question: I dabbled in music making back in 2000 on the PS2 with a programme called Music 2000
Sherny: I had a lot of fun with it..but then stopped that & began collecting again like the rest of us vinyl maniacs at the time ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and then...? [:
Sherny: Well...I never really realised (silly as it sounds) that I'd ever MAKE music! So i was just buying it. Bought my first decks in 1998. 2x technics 1210 MkII's
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you thought you're just a fan and that's it [:
Sherny: oh yeah!! ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: many people are like that
Evaldas Azbukauskas: even those who shouldn't be like that
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so how did it come to what you are now?
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you just tried some software and
Evaldas Azbukauskas: liked it or something?
Sherny: Well.. I really need to give Kudos to my mate Scott here
Sherny: We used to work together years ago & he suggested I buy my first decks
Sherny: After a few indulgences in DJ'ing here & there. I also had a friend who was working on an Internet Radio Station 'Worldwide FM' back in 2004
Sherny: now defunct unfortunately
Sherny: We had great fun & came up with our own 'alternative' slot
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool
Sherny: My other friend Jamie was playing (as I was) more upfront music as well as deep house. He then suggested we have our own slot so we came up with 'Rew!red'. To some nice feedback from acorss the globe.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: this must have been so much fun [:
Sherny: It was great! plus it was a Sunday slot between 10am - 12pm & I was usually hungover ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: hehe
Sherny: But I think that added to how the experience somehow lol
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i believe it did [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: what gear are you using to make your tracks now?
Sherny: I use reason 5 & a Korg Micro X keyboard & an iMac
Evaldas Azbukauskas: do you have any future plans with music? upcoming releases, mixes, anything?
Sherny: With me..I never plan anything really but I'm always wanting to do mixes & still Deep house is the one I love. Deep House as in the kinda stuff that Fred P is putting out. That guy is a master!
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool. i guess you have a big collection of deep house vinyls?
Sherny: hehehe...Quite a bit yes.
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you still like to spin them?
Sherny: when i feel like it..I'm falling into the 'digital collective' & so listen to most releases on the Net etc. But yes when i can ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: it seems like computers are taking over and things like serato is almost like a primary way of dj'ing, and some guys would just play dj sets with ableton. what do you think of all this?
Sherny: It's the age now where technology is moving sooo fast. Faster than I think we could've thought over 20 years ago. So I'm not as such against it, but I do believe that the humble vinyl still has 'that' sound which you can not replicate. I'm guilty of using digital software for mixes but if I was asked to play records, i'd jump at it. Hope that answers the question ![]()
Sherny: So it's still in my heart to play records ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: yes i understand what you're saying here
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Sherny: I still love my MkII's ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i'm kind of into everything analog
Evaldas Azbukauskas: tape recorders, analog synths
Evaldas Azbukauskas: love it all
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Sherny: Ah yes! I still have tapes form years ago as well my Minidisc player & tape players!
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i bought a reel to reel tape recorder like couple of months ago, still braging about it
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ![]()
Sherny: I remember you saying..that is pretty dam cool sir
Sherny: I haven't got room where I am for anything like that...yet
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you're thinking of having a lot of gear in the future? [:
Sherny: it's all baby steps..I still think I'm a novice
Evaldas Azbukauskas: well we learn all our lives
Sherny: indeed
Evaldas Azbukauskas: that's all we do every day
Sherny: yes
Sherny: But in answer to your question
Sherny: I'd like to play with a few more toys ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: i see [:
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ok let's get now to the standart questions
Evaldas Azbukauskas: like
Evaldas Azbukauskas: what are you favourite and most inspirational artists?
Sherny: WOW!! What a question..lol
Evaldas Azbukauskas:

Sherny: Like most people it was the Detroit sounds in the mid 90's that got me started
Sherny: as well as british acts like Aphex Twin, Black Dog. The ever amazing Future Sound Of London
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool
Sherny: But from 2003 onwards it became Pub
Evaldas Azbukauskas: is that a band? ![]()
Sherny: Check ampoulerecords.com
Sherny: it's a guy from Scotland..Highly highly talented man. Met him once in Eupen, Belgium..A highlight for me!!
Evaldas Azbukauskas: checking him out, can't believe i've never heard of him before
Sherny: neither can I ! ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you're like encyclopedia of electronic music
Sherny: lol ![]()
Sherny: again partly me but also down to my mates Scott, Neil & Gary (GRIT)
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ok next question
Evaldas Azbukauskas: there must be something you enjoy doing besides music?
Sherny: well...I don't exercise much ![]()
Sherny: But I like to get out & socialise when I can
Sherny: always loved films
Sherny: hence my name SEN
Evaldas Azbukauskas: it's somehow related to some movie?
Sherny: yes. the film THX1138 by George Lucas
Evaldas Azbukauskas: so i guess you're into sci-fi?
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Sherny: yes i am & the usual action flicks
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and last question
Evaldas Azbukauskas: but not the most easiest
Evaldas Azbukauskas: if i would ask "what is music" what would you say?
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ![]()
Sherny: I could get all spiritual here lol..but honestly? To me it's a form of escapism, healing & a great communicator. One of the best in my opinions it conveys emotions across the world & people of all races etc 'get that' ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: cool
Evaldas Azbukauskas: you told a lot of interesting stuff here, so thanks a lot
Sherny: No prblem..I could go on for hours. I'm a music NUT!
Evaldas Azbukauskas: hehe ![]()
Evaldas Azbukauskas: ok it'll be up on a website soon
Evaldas Azbukauskas: and take care mate
Evaldas Azbukauskas: [:
Sherny: thank you Evaldas for this. I've relaly enjoyed the interview. Take care..End of Transmission..ssssssssss ![]()
