F.l.o. interview

Share

F.l.o. is Florian Gast from Berlin, who recently released a full lenght techno album on our label. He agreed to answer to some of our questions. Enjoy the interview!

How are you feeling, and what thoughts do you have as you have just released your full lenght CD album?

I’m still a little bit mixed up about the fact that i just released my debut album but i feel fine. I’v been waiting for this chance for a long time – and now it happened.

What did you mean by this phrase “Food for Thought”?

It’s a “thought-provoking impulse” or just “stuff to reflect on”… A lot of my tracks are very emotional and they give me a kind of food for thought in many ways. I think this album just contributes to that.

Ok, then, tell us about your background. How did it all start, and how did it evolve to F.l.o. that we know today?

I think i got hooked on electronic music when i was 15 and a friend of mine played some acid house records at a small party in a an old barn – which was quite cool at the time. The location, the positive energy and of course the music inspired me. And then i saved all my money for 2 technics turntables. From then on I spent most of the time in record shops or locked myself up in my room to terrorize my parents with uncoordinated beats. On weekends we would go to places like the “Aufschwung Ost” or Sven Väth’s “Omen” and danced all night. When i was 17 years old I was playing small clubs and venues. In 2005 i tried to make my own tracks for the first time. But it took my a while to feel confident enough to present my first one. Then i got some good reviews and release requests. The project “f.l.o.” was born.

I never really expected any success from my music and it was never about that. I just wanted to make my own music – regardless of any trend or other people’s opinion.

What do you think did the biggest impact to you as a musician?

My netaudio debut three years ago was a smasher for me, but to have a vinyl release together with Andomat 3000 on the German label 1×1 was the crowning achievement.

Any big(small) names that you think are worth mentioning?

Andomat 3000. Without him the project “f.l.o.” wouldn’t exist in this way/form. Thanks man! Furthermore… Verano at arteqcue, Paskal, Load and Clear, Sula Muse, Rohs and all  the rest that I`ve forgot.

I can hear this hiss/fuzz in the background of your tracks, which i guess is an influence of early dub techno in 90′s. Am i right?

Yes, that’s right… The early dubtechno releases changed my life!!!

What other genres of music do you like other than techno?

Back in the days i listened to punk rock, hardcore and ska, but nowadays almost entirely electronic stuff: House, Deep House, Ambient, Dub Techno, electronica, electro… From time to time some new minimal “click clack stuff”, but i also like jazz very much!

I saw your pictures on facebook, where you were fishing. Is this your main hobby when you’re not producing music?

Yes, i like to go fishing, this is probably the only thing i do since my childhood days and will continue in the future. It’s a good balance to my job and my musical activities.

What else do you do in your life?

Eat, sleep, work – a lot of the latter…

You live in Berlin, which is often called a capital of electronic music. Especially when we’re talking about dance music. Do you visit clubs or is there anything that really makes you feel that this is Berlin?

Musically Berlin was always groundbreaking to me. No other city is more inspiring. But i don’t go to clubs that much recently…

Do you have any special experiences while Dj’ing? Maybe there was some funny story or something?

Oh yeah, there were some special incidents, but i don’t want to go into details here… hehe.

Do you have any future plans with music and your life in general?

I’m quite spontaneous and don’t plan too much. I think I’m gonna change professionally… And if i can share my music with others in the future, i think i’ll be happy.

What is your favourite food?

I love fish! Sushi is on the top rung… And i can suggest eel and trout – smoked with potato or bread and a good dry wine.

Ok, thanks for the answers Florian! Keep doing amazing music, we love it!

Thank you.
