Moonwalker aka VidasM interview
Moonwalker, aka VidasM has just released his debut album “Trip” on Cold Tear Records. Great deep, dub, ambient techno album.
He agreed to answer to some of our questions.
Cold Tear Records: Can we start?
Moonwalker: Yes, wait a minute, i’ll bring a cup of tea.
CTR: Good idea! I’ll bring a cup of tea too.
M: I’m ready.
CTR: Ok then. How are you?
M: I’m really fine recently.
CTR: How are you feeling after you released your album?
M: I was worried at first if people are going to like it or not, but i’m very happy to have received some good feedback.
CTR: I’m happy to hear that too! Can you tell us about, how you started to make music?
M: I started making music more seriously at year 2000. I got some primitive software called “Magix music maker” and “Finale”. I didn’t start with E-Jay as many others did (i tried it later). I didn’t know anything about composition, harmony. I was making music by ear. I don’t have any musical education, so i had to learn everything by my self. But i had a lot of will to be doing it and i still do have a lot of will. Especially nowadays, when you can get everything from internet quite easily.
CTR: Ok. But how was your current sound and style formed, shaped? Were you always looking for your sound, or were you trying to mimic other artists?..
M: Of course, at first i was trying to mimic other famous artists, but i was also always trying to give it a unique touch. I realized that i won’t astonish anyone if i try to mimic others. I always try to astonish others. I think after a lot of work i managed to reach this goal. How it was shaped? As you said, i was always looking for my sound.
CTR: What track are you listening to right now???
M: I’m listening to Saycet’s album “Through the window” at the moment.
CTR: I thought maybe i’ll catch you listening to some POP, or something
M: I sometimes really do listen to POP. But only quality POP. And sometimes i just want to remember the old, good times and listen to 90′s hits.
CTR: Are there any famous (or not famous) names, that really made an impact to your musical development?
M: It’s not easy to answer this question. There are a lot of artists and bands that i like and listen to a lot. But did they really do an impact to me? I cannot tell. But if we’re talking about my project Moonwalker in particular, I started it when i started to listen to dub, ambient techno music. I was listening to Lulu Rouge, Yagya, Monolake, Basic Channel, Girių Dvasios, and it didn’t completely satisfy me personally. So i tried to make something that would satisfy me, and i think i did it successfully.
CTR: I see. And what’s your opinion about dub techno in general?
M: I like it. It’s one of those genres which evokes positive emotions while you listen to it. Positive – not necessarily happy. Dub techno is a great tool to put yourself into this state where you can think or dive into yourself, to meditate.
CTR: Is this the purpose of Moonwalker’s music?
M: I can’t tell if this is the purpose, but i think it could be used for this.
CTR: Ok, i see
Let’s talk about something else. Tell us about the environment where your music is born.
M: It’s really simple. A chair, a table, computer, monitors, controller and keyboard. There’s also headphones, so i can make music at night without disturbing anyone.
CTR: And which part of the day is the most productive?
M: I was expecting this question. It can be any time. Ideas come at any time, and i’m happy that i don’t have to use anything to stimulate my creativity. Sometimes i don’t feel very creative, but that rarely ever happens.
CTR: Can you tell us what hardware and software you are using?
M: Hardware: Novation remote zero sl controler (which is used more for live performances than production), m-audio keystation 49e midi keyboard, sony music center speakers are my monitors. My computer - acer aspire intel pentium dual core 1,73ghz with 2gb of RAM. I wish it was better but i can still produce music with it. Software – ableton live and a lot of VSTi’s.
CTR: What is your experience with gigs? Do you like playing live? Any special memories?
M: I haven’t played a lot of shows. I’m always nervous before my performances. Of course, it’s a big pleasure to play for audience, especially if they like the music. I was once invited to play in some event, where i didn’t receive any attention at all. It don’t know if that was organiser’s fault. It looked like audience didn’t understand my music and they needed something different. But this kind of experience is also valuable.
CTR: Yeah, sometimes it happens. Let’s get back to your album. Can you explain us, why “Trip”?
M: As i have mentioned before, my music is that feeling which you can feel at night. This is why it’s called “Trip”. It’s a trip through the night. The names of the tracks and the order of them are made up to tell about that trip, with a lot of emotions like fear, calmness. You feel those emotions, meet strangers etc…
CTR: Great. And can you tell us about the process of your album creation? Is it a collection of tracks or was this album made from scratch to the end?
M: I made it from scratch. I had a vision and i was able to accomplish it. I don’t know if it’s easy to see that vision while listening to my album. I think it is.
CTR: What else have you released, not only as Moonwalker?
M: I have released a lot of tracks as VidasM. I have a new release that came out this week. There are 6 releases including that one. There are also some tracks released on compilations.
CTR: Maybe we’ll just add a link to your discogs page or somewhere else, so our readers could check out your discography.
M: Sure. I was thinking if i should name all my releases here.
CTR: What are you doing in your life other than music?
M: I really like movies. I always check out the newest movies and i always have to see at least one of them, if i have a chance. Too bad we don’t have a cinema in our town.
CTR: What are your favorite movies?
M: I can’t tell you about the exact movies, but i really like British production. Because they have two advantages: British humor and they are not that boring, everything happen faster.
CTR: Do you have any plans for the future? Releases, shows, projects?
M: I’ve got one plan. It’s more of a dream than a plan. I’d really like to make a live show with a vocalist, live drums, guitar, bass etc. But for now, i’ll just continue making music and look for an exceptional sound.
Of course, i’d be very happy if i could be making music without having to care about anything else and could make a living with music.
CTR: Ok then, thanks for a conversation!
M: That’s all? No problem.
